This photograph shows a farmer with his two sons threshing barley with a couple of oxen. This is a very common sight during harvest time, which depends on the crop. One may see barley, wheat, lentils and chick peas.

Trees in the northern hemisphere, at this time of the year, show off their underlying splendour. This shot was taken at a park near Arundel, Sussex, England. Let me introduce you to Betalehem. She is an orphan living in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. When my wife and I first met her in October '06, we thought she was about 6 yrs old, but she was 8. Her small size is possibly due to the fact that she has HIV/AIDS. Part of our tour of the township near Swakopmund allowed us to quench our thirst at the pub. The three ladies in the photo are from Australia. When people migrate to the city of Swakopmund for work, they live in this shanty town until a permanent house is available in the township, which is behind me and to the right of the road. They can get a mortgage if they are working. I think the cost of a cinder-block home was about 6 or 800 dollars.

Today's photograph is the infamous Dune 45. It is located at a place called Sossevlei. The best time to climb the dune is either before sunrise or 45 minutes before sunset. Today, 2nd June, 2009, is my dad's 95th birthday, but regretfully he passed away in Kelowna on 11th April. I was on my way to see him, but unfortunately he didn't know. If he had, I'm sure he would've hung on a little longer. A beautiful place we camped at during our overland safari in 2007. It reminded me of the Olgas in Australia.We didn't pitch our tent that night - slept under the stars. The name is pronounced like the S. African "koppie"Namibia is a country to which I would love to return. Mostly desert, it is sparsely populated (2nd or 3rd lowest, I think) with spectacular scenery. I watched the pied kingfisher fishing in the Blue Nile River at Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. It returned to the same perch after each flight over the water's surface.The little fella is a superb fairy wren. As it flew from one location to another, I saw a bright flash of blue on its wings. It was nesting close to the ocean at a place called Ayer's Inlet, Victoria, Australia.

I spent most of the day a couple of winters back photographing these grosbeaks as they gorged themselves on the fruit of an ornamental cherry tree in the garden of my Eastend home. It was easy because they attacked the cherries so voraciously that they hardly noticed me leaning against the back door. Their acrobatics kept a smile on my face.

I consider photographing birds to be the most challenging of all animal life.
